आख्यान किसे कहते हैं

महाभारत केवल एक युद्धकी कथा नहीं है। उसके अठारह पर्वोंमें सैकड़ों छोटी-बड़ी कथाएँ गुँथी हुई हैं — किसी पात्रके प्रश्नपर कही गयी, किसी सङ्कटके समय सुनायी गयी, अथवा किसी ऋषिके उपदेशके रूपमें आयी हुई। इन्हींको आख्यान, उपाख्यान और संवाद कहा जाता है। नल-दमयन्ती, सावित्री, अणीमाण्डव्य, मुद्गल, वृत्रवध — ये सब मुख्य कथाके भीतर अपनी-अपनी पूर्ण कथाएँ हैं, और सदियोंसे स्वतन्त्र रूपसे पढ़ी और सुनायी जाती रही हैं।

The Mahābhārata is not one story but many. Woven through its eighteen parvas are hundreds of self-contained episodes — the ākhyānas, upākhyānas and saṃvādas — told when a character asks a question, when a crisis needs a precedent, or when a sage answers. Nala and Damayantī, Sāvitrī, Aṇīmāṇḍavya, Mudgala, the slaying of Vṛtra: each is a complete story inside the larger one, and each has been read on its own for centuries.

ये पृष्ठ कैसे बने हैं

प्रत्येक आख्यान गीताप्रेस संस्करणके उन्हीं अध्यायोंसे तैयार किया गया है जिनमें वह कथा कही गयी है। गद्य पुनर्कथन है — मूल अनुवादका शब्दशः प्रतिरूप नहीं — इसलिए उसे मूलके स्थानपर न पढ़ा जाय। परन्तु जो श्लोक उद्धृत हैं वे रचे नहीं गये हैं: वे स्कैनसे ज्यों-के-त्यों लिये गये हैं, अपने वक्ता, अध्याय और श्लोक-क्रमाङ्कके साथ। जिस श्लोकका सन्दर्भ मिल नहीं सका, उसे छोड़ दिया गया है — अनुमानसे भरा नहीं गया।

Each ākhyāna is composed from the very adhyāyas of the Gita Press edition in which its story is told. The prose is a retelling, not a translation, and is not a substitute for the original. The ślokas are a different matter: they are never composed. Each is lifted verbatim from the scan with its speaker, chapter and verse number, and any citation that could not be resolved against the page was dropped rather than guessed.

स्रोत गीताप्रेस, गोरखपुरका महाभारत है, जिसका पूरा पाठ यहीं ग्रन्थ-सङ्ग्रहमें उपलब्ध है। हर कथाके साथ उसके मूल पृष्ठोंका सन्दर्भ दिया गया है और वह सीधे ग्रन्थके उसी पृष्ठपर ले जाता है जहाँसे वह लिखी गयी है। पाठक स्कैन खोलकर स्वयं देख सकता है — यहाँ कुछ भी विश्वासपर नहीं छोड़ा गया।
