The two causes for daana are true affection or devotion or liking (श्रद्धा) and capacity (शक्ति). Donations without genuine affection are not cause for dharma, but leads to sin. Capacity for donation means the surplus amount from one’s legitimate earnings after meeting the commitments towards those dependent on the giver.
